Go kart engine size

Go kart racing is a great hobby and pastime for people of all ages, but you're only as good as the go kart engine you're running. There are several techniques that can be used to increase the power of a go kart engine. The article that follows will provide you with several tips to help you get the most out of your go kart engine. Engines that are used for go karts are usually stripped from riding lawn mowers or golf carts. While this is a great way to give new life to an old engine, it also comes with some limitations.

The government has set up safety measures that prevent lawn mowers and golf carts from hitting high speeds. They do this by installing what they call a "governor. The obvious solution to making an engine go faster is to increase the size of the engine. Many go kart engines only yield about 5 horsepower. Even upgrading to a 5. The name of the game is fuel injection.

The carburetor is the workhorse of the go kart engine. There are jets within the carburetor that can cause the go kart engine to go slower.

Changing these jets will increase the power of the go kart engine. You can also mill the head of the engine and bore the cylinders. A go kart engine has a motor pulley that is attached to the crankshaft of the motor. A small motor pulley decreases the speed and increases power of the engine. Measure the size of the motor pulley on your go kart engine and replace it with one that is larger.

You will see a marked improvement in speed, but some loss in power. Like the engine pulley, if you replace the transmission pulley, you can increase the speed of the go kart. The transmission pulley is attached behind the motor pulley and is held in place by a bolt. By removing this bolt, you are able to remove the transmission pulley.

To get an improvement in speed and power, it needs to be replaced with one that is smaller than the old one by at least 2 inches. Many people feel that running a go kart without an air filter increases its speed and power.I am wondering what size engine i should use so far i can get anwhere from I understand sprockets and gearing can all change but dont give me an answer like "it depends" give me an example like using this gear ratio and this size engine it should go "blah blah miles per hour" or something like that.

I have read that a 6 hp engine can go anwhere from mph but what speed would a 10 hp engine go? A 10 hp engine with the same ratio will go the same speed but have ALOT more torque.

If you want to go really fast make the 10hp engine have a 3 to 1 ratio. Well the 10 HP would probably be the best you might not get as much top end speed.

For ex. Not much faster but the difference is when you have a bigger engine it takes less time to reach top end speed. Basically in all simpleness in speed wise there is not much difference between the 6HP and 10 HP engines but the 10 HP will have more get up and go and be able to accelerate faster. My choice would be the 10 HP. Also as for the gears if you want more torque then go with lower sprocket gears if you want more speed but takes a lil while to get there go with higher sprocket gears.

But this is all just being a example to give you a picture, actual speeds will be different in the end. Answer Save. Favorite Answer. Source s : had a 5. With stock gearing. Erika Lv 4. It should have style and curves that captivate your imagination.

It should move YOU! The Go-Kart Alley kits will definitely move you! Vintage go-karts have a fond place in the hearts of many. Fans of Go-Kart Alley frequently remark that the go-karts are just like the ones they used to have. But acquiring an original vintage kart is getting harder and harder. They are either too hard to find, too expensive or too far gone to restore without a great deal of time, tooling and effort.

We restored a number of classic vintage go-karts for our web series. Once we began to think about producing our own kits, we took a look at our fleet of over 18 go-karts to get inspired! We went with a design that is the perfect blend between race kart and yard kart. Something that will give you superior handling on the track yet rugged enough to take the abuse you might give it off road. Remember, Go-Kart Alley is fiction.

Go-karts are real, both real fun and real dangerous. Our stunts are carried out by trained drivers on closed courses under the supervision of professional stunt coordinators. It is vitally important that anyone riding a go-kart wear the proper protective gear.

Go Kart Engine: Is my engine is going to be too powerful?

The rider should wear, at a minimum, a full-face DOT-rated motorcycle helmet, gloves and a helmet supporting neck brace. These items and other safety equipment are not supplied with the kits but can be found through many online or retail sellers. Frame quality appears excellent, welds appear excellent. Many times I have been chided by my friends, because I have a Briggs Vanguard engine that they think I should put on my gokart. It is a 16 horsepower that someone gave me for fixing their go-kart, and it sits. You are probably thinking that I should use it.

Well I have run the calculations and a 16 horsepower motor is way too powerful for what I want to do right now. What will happen is the wheels spin out of control and I really will only be able to go that one speed which is about 35 mph because if I actually ride my go-kart at top speed I have to crank it up to 6, rpm to get top speed! A better use for that motor would be in a heavier go-kart.

So your question may be were did I come up with that?

Well obviously from my experience, but also because I am able to run a calculation. One nice thing is that I have laid out for you in the go-kart guru website a calculations page. Basically what you do is you throw in your weight that your go-kart is, how much you weigh, how much weight your rear wheels are going to hold, the gearing that goes in the calculation, then finally your horsepower your engine is putting out and how much rpm.

So the 16 horsepower motor had 3, rpm. If you just go over to the calculation page program and plug in the 16 horsepower. You will see that the tires will spin too fast. Maybe I want it to spin too fast! Okay that is a good question. Maybe I have got a motorcycle engine and I want to put it on my go-kart.

But how do I know that is out of control? Maybe I have a snowmobile engine and I want to put it on my go-kart. Well let me give you some word of advice. Go-kart engines, once you get up to 20 horsepower or higher are just can be too much power so much power that you cannot really handle it. It is really not fun. The idea is to be able to max the horsepower reasonably so that you are not squealing the tires out of control.

So the calculation will help aide you in figuring out how much power is too much or too little power.Kart racing or karting is a variant of motorsport road racing with open-wheelfour-wheeled vehicles known as go-karts or shifter karts. They are usually raced on scaled-down circuitsalthough some professional kart races are also held on full-size motorsport circuits. Karting is commonly perceived as the stepping stone to the higher ranks of motorsports, with former Formula One champions such as Sebastian VettelNico RosbergAyrton SennaLewis HamiltonMichael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso having begun their careers in karting.

American Art Ingels is generally accepted to be the father of karting.

A veteran hot rodder and a race car builder at Kurtis Krafthe built the first kart in Southern California in InMcCulloch was the first company to produce engines for karts. Its first engine, the McCulloch MC, [3] was an adapted chainsaw two-stroke engine. The chassis are made of chrome moly tubing. The stiffness of the chassis enables different handling characteristics for different circumstances.

Typically, for dry conditions a stiffer chassis is preferable, while in wet or other poor traction conditions, a more flexible chassis may work better.

Temperature of the track can also affect handling and may prompt additional chassis adjustments. The best chassis allow for stiffening bars at the rear, front and side to be added or removed according to race conditions. Braking is achieved by a disc brake mounted on the rear axle. Front disc brakes are used in most shifter kart classes and are increasingly popular in other classes; however, certain classes do not allow them.

Amusement park go-karts can be powered by four-stroke engines or electric motorswhile racing karts use small two-stroke or four-stroke engines. Karts do not have a differential. This is achieved by designing the chassis so that the inside rear tire lifts up slightly when the kart turns the corner.

This allows the tire to lose some of its grip and slide or lift off the ground completely. Power is transmitted from the engine to the rear axle by a chain. Both engine and axle sprockets are removable.

Their ratio must be adapted to the track configuration to obtain the most performance from the engine. In the early days, karts were direct drive requiring push starts.

The inconvenience of that configuration led to the centrifugal clutch for the club level classes. Wheels and tires are much smaller than those used on a normal car. Rims are made of magnesium alloy, aluminumor composite materials. Some car tire manufacturers, such as BridgestoneDunlopand Maxxis make tires for karts.

Similar to other motorsports, kart tires have different types for use appropriate to track conditions:. As in other motor sports, several data acquisition systems have been developed for kart racing. These systems allow the driver to monitor from a display fixed on the steering wheel some parameters such as RPM, timing of laps including sectorsnumber of laps, best lap, cooling system temperature, exhaust gas temperature and sometimes speed or even gear for shifter karts.

More sophisticated systems allow for more information such as lateral and longitudinal acceleration g-forcethrottle position, steering wheel position and brake pressure. Kart racing is generally accepted as the most economic form of motorsport available on four wheels. As a free-time activity, it can be performed by almost anybody, and as a motorsport in itself, it is one of the sports regulated by FIA under the name of CIKpermitting licensed racing for anyone from the age of 8 onward.

There is a manual released every year detailing the various rules and regulations that race meetings and drivers have to follow. Racing classes start at age 7 or 8 5 in the US with "Kid Karts" and generally run in 3-year age groupings or weight divisions until "senior" status is reached at age 15 or 16, depending on the series.

Some are motorless, while others are high-powered racing machines. The most basic style of go kart is a gravity racer. These are commonly known as Soap Box Derby carts- they lack motors and gain momentum speeding down hills. A recreational go kart is frequently powered by electric motors or four-stroke engines.

High-performance racing racing typically employ two or four -stroke engines. Generally, go karts are single seaters and are rarely built to handle passengers.

Are you interested in kart racing? Then you can try to build a powerful and easy to control go- kart using this plan. However, the builder warns that this is not a novice-friendly plan and some of the fabrication technique he uses might be dangerous for someone with little experience.

As for the tools, you require just the basics — a drill, a chop saw, and a sander. The motor might need a small push to start, and the builder warns that you should never attempt to start it under load.
